Oral Conscious Sedation is defined as a minimally depressed level of consciousness that retains the patient's ability to independently and continuously maintain an airway and respond appropriately to physical stimulation and verbal command and that is produced by pharmacological or nonpharmacologic method or a combination thereof.

Oral Sedation Dentistry refers to the way dentists manage patient's anxiety level during dental appointments.

Medications used for Oral Conscious Sedation in dentistry are from a group of drugs known as benzodiazepines. The most common medication used is Halcyon (triazolam). Not only do these medications have a sedative effect, they also have some degree of amnesic effect on people. This means many patients remember little or nothing about their dental appointment.

Advantages of Oral Conscious Sedation, besides the level of relaxation for the patient, are:

  • It is effective for mild or moderate Anxiety
  • It is safe and easy to monitor
  • It works well for almost every patient.

The disadvantages are that the patient can not drive for 24 hours, so it will be necessary to have a companion bring them and take them home from the office; and this medication is for sedative effects only, it is not to treat or alleviate pain. Also, some patients with certain health issues are not candidates for this type of sedation, but our knowledgeable team members can help you determine if Oral Sedation Dentistry is right for you.
